PV Updates at MIT

Plenty happening at MIT in the world of PV. Several exciting developments are still under wraps, but a few recently hit the press. Stay tuned for further announcements...


1) 1366 Tech, the new venture of MIT Prof. Ely Sachs (inventor of the Evergreen String Ribbon growth process, the Evergreen Quad furnace, and 3D printing technology) and Frank von Mierlo (formerly of MIT spin-off Bluefin), has announced $12.4M funding. Here is a snipped from the NCPV hotline:

MIT Start-up Financing
1366 Technologies, a new MIT start-up aiming to make silicon solar cells competitive with coal, has secured $12.4 million in a first round of financing co-led by North Bridge Venture Partners and Polaris Venture Partners. MIT professor, 1366 founder and CTO, Ely Sachs, noted the 1366 Technologies will be combining innovations in silicon cell architecture with manufacturing process improvements to bring multi-crystalline silicon solar cells to cost parity with coal-based electricity. 2) The PV Research Lab at MIT received a DOE research grant to employ novel "defect engineering" methods to improve the efficiencies of commercial solar cells: http://www.doe.gov/news/6071.htm

Energy costs have risen to this rate due to a large amount of political lobby and no lack of demand on petroleum products. While the demand of energy is increasing the supply of alternative systems are not. Therefore allowing the oil industries to increase costs while increasing supply. Find help at www.onewaytec.com

The main reason why solar isn't number one on energy efficient technologies is because most people have no clue how it works or where to begin purchasing it. As a retailer/marketer in the solar field, I hope to spread the word and educate the world on the solar movement and give them a place to start. It's all about guiding people to the product and letting them see the benefits themselves. It seems that everywhere you turn you are seeing more and more Solar products begining to emerge. One of the latest trends that is hitting the Global Market is Solar For Golf Carts. Many Golf Courses are taking the Eco-Friendly approach to their Golf Courses by using recycled water, biodegradable materials, Chemical Free pesticides and fertilizers to name a few. But the Newest and most fascinating is putting Solar Tops on the Golf Carts!

This past May, Sebonack Golf Club in Southhampton, NY converted 39 of their 40 Golf carts into Solar. Earlier this year, the Jockey Club Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course in Hong Kong became the first club in the world to outfit it's entire fleet of golf carts with Solar Tops. Both claim an annual savings of over $50,000.00 US by going Solar. Hawaii Prince Golf Club has also converted 10 of their golf carts.

The impact this is having is not only the reduction in their Carbon footprint, but the reduction in downtime for their golfers and the savings on electric costs because they do not have to plug in as often. And one of the greater advantages to going Solar is the extended battery life. The costs savings become tremendous as well as continuous.

This is definitely a trend worth watching. And encouraging for those of us who look to business' that become more Eco-Friendly.

cool blog, im really gettin into this solar thing, it IS time for the world to go GREEN! I found a pretty cool solar site on stumble upon the other day, solarpower4dummies.com pretty neat site, easy name to remember, not that i agree calling people dummies, haha! Anyway I really like the solar calculator on the home page, neat seeing variances in solar costs from state to state!
